Through the course of their investigation, they run across prostitute Mary Kelly (Heather Graham, astonishingly gorgeous for a Victorian-era streetwalker) and an attraction develops between her and Abberline as the policeman tries to solve the murderers with the help of a brilliant physician (the always great Ian Holm).Īs you can probably tell, this movie version of From Hell is a pretty standard serial killer movie of the Kiss the Girls variety, dolled up with gaslit gothic creepiness along with some of the political and metaphysical concerns of Moore¿s version. In the film, they¿re quintessentially bickering cops, and Abberline is an opium addict tormented by psychic visions of Jack¿s crimes (a truly dumb and unfortunate story choice that only seems ridiculous and underdeveloped). Abberline and Godley were in the book too, but there they were serious, dogged plodders grimly trying to understand the perverse logic of the murders. Godley (Robbie Coltrane) mount an investigation. The film, on the other hand, is structured like a normal mystery: As the murders unfold, police inspector Fred Abberline (Johnny Depp, just fine in a role not too dissimilar from his Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow) and his partner Sgt. There¿s no real mystery in the book, at least in any conventional genre sense – it¿s much more a ¿Whydunit¿ and a ¿Howdunit¿ than a whodunit. One of the biggest differences between what could be done in the graphic novel versus what is done in the movie is the whole nature of the story itself: In the book, the reader knows, less than a fourth of the way into the story, exactly who Jack the Ripper is and why he¿s killing Whitechapel whores. That¿s why, on one level, it¿s hard not to admire this film version of From Hell – directed by Allen and Albert Hughes ( Menace II Society), and written by Terry Hayes ( The Road Warrior) and Rafael Yglesias ( Fearless) it definitely attempts to convey the scope and themes of Moore¿s piece, even while necessarily altering the storytelling for the demands of mainstream commercial film.
It is an incredible read, well worth checking out even if you¿re not normally a comics fan, but – like Watchmen – the tale poses extraordinarily daunting challenges to anyone who might try to adapt it. Even more dense and dark than Moore¿s classic Watchmen (also a long-in-development film project), the story wove elaborate theories connecting the killings to Royal Family conspiracy and Freemason mysticism. The killing spree of Jack the Ripper, who famously murdered five prostitutes in the Whitechapel area of London in 1888, is the focus of this adaptation of Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell¿s already-legendary 1999 graphic novel of the same title.
